The Highland Gentleman Who’ll Hold Your Drink: The Highlander Table
A whimsical mid–20th-century carved and painted wood kilt table—crafted entirely from wood, including the sculpted Highlander legs, traditional ghillie brogues, cream ribbed kilt hose, tasselled garter flashes, and the round tabletop rendered as a draped kilt painted in a bold red-and-green tartan closely resembling Royal Stewart. Richly carved details—from the lace-up ghillie brogues and textured kilt hose to the scalloped, pleated “fabric” of the kilt—give the piece a lively trompe-l’œil presence and an unmistakably cheeky personality. As the old Scottish saying goes, “A man in a kilt is a man and a half,” and this playful sculpture fully embraces that spirit. A standout example of mid-century craftsmanship with humor and charm, it remains in very good condition with light surface wear consistent with age and workmanship.
