Set of Four Large 19th-Century Apothecary Jars, 18.5″ High, with Original Lids

Set of Four Monumental 19th-Century Apothecary Jars, Europe (likely France or Italy), circa mid–19th century. Each exceptionally large jar measures approximately 9 inches in diameter by 18.5 inches high and is formed in glazed white porcelain, fitted with its original domed lid. The jars are decorated with hand-painted black-and-gold cartouches and gilded bands, reflecting the refined yet utilitarian aesthetic of professional pharmacies of the period. Their impressive scale suggests use in a major apothecary, hospital pharmacy, or teaching institution.

Each jar retains its original Latin or vernacular designation, identifying the contents once stored within:
CERATO. SIMPLE. – Ceratum Simplex, a basic wax-based medicinal ointment
CERATO. COLD CREAM. – Cold cream preparation, widely used for skin treatment
UNG. CANTARID. – Unguentum Cantharidis, a blistering ointment made from cantharides (Spanish fly), historically used as a counter-irritant
POMADA. ROSA. – Rose pomade, a fragrant ointment used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes

All jars show light surface wear, minor staining, and gentle rubbing to the gilding consistent with age and professional use. The porcelain bodies are intact, and lids are present and well fitting. A rare and visually striking group, notable for their exceptional size, clear pharmaceutical inscriptions, and strong decorative presence—ideal for collectors of medical history, interior display, or institutional settings.
