Pair of 19th-C French Bronze Tripod Candlesticks- Martial Motifs on Marble Bases
Pair of 19th-Century Bronze Candlesticks with Martial Motifs, France, mid-19th century (circa 1850–1870), Second Empire period. Each candlestick is conceived as a sculptural tripod formed by crossed spears, rising from circular rouge marble bases. The shafts are enriched with finely cast and chased military attributes, including a round shield decorated with scrolling ornament and a central boss, crossed gloves, tasselled elements, and a helmet-form candle cup above, evoking classical and Renaissance-inspired arms and armor.
Executed in patinated bronze with gilt highlights, these candlesticks reflect the strong taste for historicism and martial symbolism prevalent during the reign of Napoleon III, when decorative objects often drew inspiration from antiquity and the Renaissance. The bronze elements are crisply detailed, with contrasting dark and warm tones, and the marble bases provide both visual weight and stability. Minor wear to the patina and light surface marks to the marble are consistent with age. A dramatic and uncommon pair, well-suited to collectors of 19th-century French decorative arts or interiors with a neoclassical or eclectic character.
