Neoclassicism in Balance: 18th Century Louis XVI Square Center Table

Louis XVI Square Center Table
France, late 18th century

An elegant French Louis XVI–period square center table distinguished by its refined neoclassical ornament and harmonious proportions. The table features a richly veined marble top resting above a frieze decorated with finely carved and gilt rosettes and a central neoclassical urn-and-drapery motif. A single shallow drawer is discreetly integrated into the apron, preserving the table’s symmetry while adding functional refinement.

The table is raised on four slender, tapering legs, each carved with vertical fluting and stylized foliate motifs, terminating in petite block feet. The original painted and parcel-gilt surface, with its soft cream ground and warm gilding, exemplifies the restrained elegance and architectural clarity associated with the Louis XVI style, which drew inspiration from classical antiquity.

This refined center table would have originally served as a salon or drawing-room table, intended to be viewed from all sides. It remains a timeless example of French neoclassical furniture, equally suitable as a center table, occasional table, or refined accent in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
