Hanging Right Whale Carving by Jeff Raymond, Folk Art from the “Whale Guy”
This large hand-carved and painted wooden Right Whale sculpture is by Jeff Raymond (1949–2022) of Poughkeepsie and Red Hook, NY, a self-taught folk artist known for his lifelong fascination with marine life, particularly whales and Hudson River wildlife. Measuring approximately 37" L x 14.5" H x 16.25" W, the whale features Raymond’s signature style—smooth, rounded form, expressive face, and bold, original paintwork in rich browns and soft neutrals. Though unsigned, the carving is unmistakably his, and comes from his personal estate in Red Hook. Originally intended for store display, the piece includes its original hanging brackets and remains in very good condition. Raymond, affectionately known as the “Whale Guy” in Nantucket, often drew inspiration from Moby Dick and spent his later years selling through Nantucket’s Four Winds Craft Guild and Sylvia’s Antiques. His work, deeply rooted in the American folk tradition, is increasingly sought after due to its scarcity and personal, narrative charm.
Measures: 37" x 16" x 15"
