Folk Art Mastery: Jeff Raymond’s Hand-Carved Bass on Driftwood Stand 38" Long
This beautifully hand-carved and painted folk art fish sculpture by Jeff Raymond (1949–2022, Poughkeepsie & Red Hook, NY) captures the essence of his lifelong passion for wildlife and traditional craftsmanship. Depicting a bass mounted on a natural driftwood stand, the carving is signed "Raymond '94" and remains in excellent original condition with its vibrant, well-preserved paint. Measuring 38"L x 19 3/4"H (on base) x 13"W (width of base), this piece comes from the artist’s personal estate in Red Hook, NY.
Raymond was a self-taught artist who began carving and painting wooden objects in his youth, with a deep fascination for whaling and Hudson River wildlife. Affectionately known as the "Whale Guy" during his frequent visits to Nantucket, he crafted folk art sculptures primarily for personal enjoyment and as gifts for family and friends. After retiring, he began selling his work in select Nantucket galleries. Today, his carvings are highly sought after, with only a limited number available, making this a rare and valuable collector’s piece.
