Continental School, mid-20th century – Cupped Hand — Carved Limestone Sculpture
Skillfully hewn from a single block of pale, fine-grained limestone, this life-size hand rests palm-up in a gentle, cupping gesture, its relaxed fingers and clearly incised palm lines conveying both anatomical accuracy and quiet poise. The soft buff surface retains the subtle rasp and chisel marks of hand-tool work, with light natural weathering that lends an appealing, time-worn tactility. The wrist is intentionally left flat and unpolished, allowing the piece to lie securely on a table or shelf where it can serve as an object holder—or simply as a striking study of the human form. Dimensions: 9 ½ in W × 5 in D × 3 ¾ in H (approx. 24 × 13 × 9.5 cm).
