19th-Century Single-Arm Brass Wall Sconce, France, early to mid-19th century (circa 1820–1850), Restoration to early Louis-Philippe period. This sculptural sconce is formed as a horizontally projecting arm terminating in a finely modeled hand grasping a torch-form candle holder, a classical motif symbolizing light and enlightenment. The flared bobèche is ornamented with stylized acanthus leaves, while the arm is subtly chased with organic detailing. The circular backplate is molded and finished with a beaded border.
Cast and hand-chased in brass with a rich, naturally aged patina, the sconce is currently not electrified and may be used with a candle as originally intended. Evidence of later adaptation suggests it may have been electrified at some point, though no wiring is presently in place. The piece may be left in its current state or discreetly re-electrified if desired. A refined and expressive example of 19th-century French neoclassical wall lighting.
