Barbedienne Bronze and Marble Inkwell, French, 19th Century

19th century French Barbedienne gilded bronze and rouge griotte marble inkwell by Edouard Lièvre (French, 1828-1886), 3.5" H. The "F. Barbedienne" foundry mark inscribed on the rim can be seen when the hinged bronze lid is opened. The round marble inkwell is mounted on a pair of gilded bronze chinoiserie turtle dragons which represent peace and longevity in the Chinese Tradition. Lièvre was inspired by Orientalism, which can be seen in many of his other works, including ceramics and furniture.
