John F. Herring Jr., born around 1820 in Doncaster, located in the West Riding of Yorkshire, was the son of the renowned 19th-century artist John Frederick Herring Sr. (1795-1865). During that time, Herring Sr. was esteemed as one of England's notable Sporting and Equestrian artists, favored by the English aristocracy. The artistic skill and popularity of Herring Sr., especially among the nobility, greatly benefited his son, Herring Jr. From an early age, Herring Jr. had the privilege of exposure to exquisite artwork and wealthy patrons.
